Management of radiation-induced dental cavities.. A clinical case at the Faculty of Dentistry clinics.
Radiation-induced dental caries is an important dental complication often seen in patients who have undergone radiation therapy for head and neck cancers, as it usually appears as a rapid type of decay that can lead to serious dental issues if not dealt with quickly.
A research team from the Faculty of Dentistry at the International University for Science and Technology (IUST) completed a clinical case entitled “Management of Radiation Caries in a Patient with a History of Choroid Plexus Carcinoma; A Case Report”, which addressed the management of radiation-induced dental caries in a 19-year-old patient who presented to the faculty’s clinics with a history of choroid plexus carcinoma and received radiation therapy that resulted in extensive dental damage, poor oral health due to dry mouth and changes in saliva composition, leading to the development of multiple carious lesions.
A multidisciplinary approach was used in the management of radiation-induced dental necrosis, including preventive dental care, conservative treatments, and restorative interventions.
The findings of this case highlight the importance of early detection, regular dental assessments, and the need for personalized management strategies for patients with a history of head and neck radiotherapy to mitigate the effects of radiation-induced dental necrosis, and emphasize the necessity of ongoing dental support in this vulnerable population to improve quality of life and maintain oral health.
The importance of this case comes from the scientific fact that about 30% of individuals who receive such treatment suffer from radiation-induced dental necrosis, highlighting its clinical importance and its impact on patients’ quality of life.
Conclusion: Prevention strategies are essential to mitigate the risk of radiation-induced dental caries and it is essential that dental professionals intervene early, focusing on educating patients on the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, stimulating saliva flow, and using fluoride treatments. In addition, medications such as pilocarpine can help relieve dry mouth symptoms and reduce the risk of developing radiation-induced dental caries.
