  • Qualitative clinical cases in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic at the College of Dentistry

With the aim of linking theoretical lectures with clinical work and enhancing the practical aspect of students, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic at the College of Dentistry conducted many qualitative operations with the wide participation of students of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course, in addition to students of the Anesthesia 2&3 courses to include all academic departments, under the direct supervision of the maxillofacial surgery specialist, Dr. Issa Saad, and the participation of doctors from other specialties.
One of these cases was a “peripheral giant cell granuloma” in a female patient in her forties who visited the maxillofacial surgery clinic complaining of a purple mass on the gingiva. Peripheral giant cell granuloma (Fibroius Epulis) is a relatively uncommon reactive tumor of the oral cavity, which occurs exclusively on the gingiva or alveolar ridge and typically presents as a well-defined, pedunculated or sessile mass of dark red color, which bleeds easily, can ulcerate, is relatively elastic, varies in size from 0.5 cm – 2 cm, and appears at any age (more common in females), covered by stratified pavement epidermis, loose granular connective tissue, abundant in vessels, giant cells often found around blood vessels or areas of bleeding, and this type of disease is treated surgically by excision or laser.

The patient underwent surgery under local anesthesia, and the tumor was completely removed down to the bone base with curettage using a spherical bur, covered with zinc oxide and eugenol dressing, and the results were sent for pathology to investigate any possible malignant signs. The medical team consisted of: Dr. Issa Saad, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist, Therapeutic and Cosmetic, Dr. Maya Al-Jukhdar, Pathology Specialist, Students: Mohammed Kamel Al-Hariri, Aghid minzer Al-Nasrallah.
