Among nine universities worldwide, the International University for Science and Technology has been accredited as a pilot center for the World Health Organization’s International Nonproprietary Names (INNs) School

The International University for Science and Technology has been selected as a pilot center for the World Health Organization’s International Nonproprietary Names (INNs) School. It is one of only nine universities worldwide accredited for this important role by the World Health Organization.

This selection is based on the quality of the university’s education and several other criteria, including its academic reputation and commitment to developing distinguished educational programs in the fields of pharmaceuticals and health sciences.
Through this collaboration, the university seeks to raise awareness of International Nonproprietary Names (INNs), the standardized names used internationally to name drugs and active compounds, with the aim of reducing medical errors and improving the quality of healthcare. This step is considered a strategic step in supporting medical and pharmaceutical education, as the university works to implement these names in curricula in the fields of medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.

Dr. Habib Abboud, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University, participated in the annual meeting of the International Nonproprietary Names and Labels School in Geneva, held from October 13 to 17, 2025. During the meeting, he presented a detailed report on the university’s efforts over the past two years. Students from the Faculty of Pharmacy participated in the INN School’s scientific poster competition, titled “INN FOR WHAT?”, winning three awards for the best scientific posters.
Through this pioneering center, the university aims to promote the use of international nonproprietary names for pharmaceutical drugs, contributing to raising health awareness, reducing medication errors in daily medical practice, and fostering interest in the active ingredients that form the foundation of the pharmaceutical industry.
In the future, the university seeks to more deeply integrate these names into curricula across all medical and pharmaceutical specialties, making them an essential part of the education and training process in this field.
The activation of this center will enhance the university’s role in providing distinguished and influential education in the field of pharmacology and will significantly contribute to achieving the World Health Organization’s goals of promoting global health care and protecting public health.
